The first step in combating a virus is to prevent it from entering your computer. A simplistic approach would be to only use shrink–wrapped software. But there have been a few cases of viruses distributed
(unwittingly) by software publishers.
A much better approach is to prevent the spread of the virus once it arrives. This is done by using a program (usually an INIT) which will alert a user when a virus is attempting to spread.

Prevention alone is not enough; this will not tell you if a virus is already present on your computer, other than to alert you when it spreads.
